About Seaford
Seaford is a Melbourne suburb, located at Port Phillip. It can be found 36km to the south-east of Melbourne, and 5km north of the city of Frankston. As of the 2016 census, it had a population of almost 16,500. It is popular amongst residents and tourists as a gateway to the Mornington Peninsula and its world famous beaches.
Historically, Seaford was the site of the Karrum Karrum swamp, frequented by the Bunurong Aboriginal people for the gathering of food. Following European settlement in the early twentieth century, the swamp was drained and the land used instead for farming.
Locals eventually named the new settlement Seaford in 1913, keen to incorporate the word ‘sea’ into the name, and inspired by the name of the town of Sleaford in the UK, the hometown of a prominent local Councillor at the time.
The area began to boom in the 50s and 60s, due to affordable living costs, and its ease of access to the neighbouring 5km of impressive, clean and safe beaches, as well as the nearby city of Frankston. The Seaford Foreshore Reserve lining the adjacent coast comprises numerous walking tracks through bushland and many recreational facilities. It is known as one of the few continuous strands of natural coastal vegetation in close proximity to Melbourne.
Another local attraction is the Seaford Pier, popular for fishing or swimming. Meanwhile, Keast Park provides a large expanse of parkland housing a diverse array of facilities, including a bowls club, change facilities, cafe, and community space for events.
