About Cranbourne
Prior to the arrival of European settlers, the Cranbourne area is believed to have been the traditional land of the Boonwurrung Aboriginal people. Its first white settlers were the Ruffy brothers in 1836, who went on to open the Cranbourne Inn as more and more people relocated to the area, attracted by the burgeoning cattle market that was established shortly after settlement.
Today, Cranbourne has grown into a major suburb, reported to have a population of 20,094 at the 2016 Census. It is an outer suburb of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, and is situated 43km south-east of the city’s CBD. It sits between Dandenong and Tooradin and falls into the local government area of the City of Casey.
While the look of the suburb is very much defined by its many suburban housing developments, the 363-hectare Royal Botanic Gardens can be found in the south, made up of wetlands, woodlands and walking trails, as well as offering areas for picnics and BBQs. In its grounds is also an 11 hectare Australian Garden, where visitors can see many of the country’s native plants.
